BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK/ PINK OCTOBER
12th October, 2013 was definitely a remarkable day for me. I went for an awareness walk which was educating people on what breast cancer is all about and free screening which took place at the Lizzy's Sports Complex at East Legon. This walk was hosted by Prophet Agyemang Prempeh and his extremely beautiful wife, Mrs Rosemond Prempeh who celebrated her birthday the day before. and decided to give back to society by organising an awareness program.
This walk, started from the Lizzy's Sports Complex, through some plush parts of East Legon and back to the Lizzy's Sports Complex. During the walk, a huge amount of money was raised to help support those with breast cancer. Honourable Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, MP for Ayawaso Wougon constituency, Greater Accra region was present in our midst for the walk. On our way, we met Sammy Kuffour, the footballer, and Kweku Sintim Misa who who made substiantial donations for the cause.
On reaching Lizzy's and and getting seated, there was a welcome address by Mrs. Rosemond Prempeh, who talked a little about herself and the purpose for the walk which I've already stated and after which there was a talk by a survivor of breast cancer of 5years, Mrs. Mills Luttedrodt, who shared her experience with us and told us how she was able to pull through cancer with the support of her family. Come to think of it, if you really have supportive people behind you, especially your family, you make it to greater heights. With the second survivor, who was shunned by her three children and whose husband left her to her fate, found treatment later on when she was introduced to Prophet Agyemang Prempeh and his team during an outreach program at Amasaman and has survived the cancer for 7 years with one breast cut off. She uses a fake breast now and is now happily re-married to another man and has her children by her side now. God is indeed a wonderful GOD!!
I was blessed through the talk. I found out that there is no particular cause for breast cancer or any type of cancer as well as no particular cure for cancer but if it is detected at a very early stage, it can be gotten rid of, or brought under control through the use of anti-biotics, mammograms and even though chemotheraphy. Men, I also learned, do get breast cancer but very few of them get it. The higher percentage falls on women. Also, women who smoke a lot, are prone to breast cancer more than those who don't and more so, if cancer runs in one's family, she's likely to suffer and therefore, needs to get herself checked as quickly as possible. Personal hygiene also contributes to breast cancer especially, in a lactating mum. During breastfeeding, some of the milk drops into the bra of the lactating woman and the bacteria in the milk generates which causes breast cancer if the woman hardly changes her bra often. So a lactating woman should have at least, 5 bras and should be changed regularly.
One can examine herself using the self examination method by checking for dimples and lumps in the breasts and in the armpits. This could be done by lying down, standing, in the shower. If you happen to find dimples in the breasts and lumps in the breasts and armpits, know that you need to seek medical attention immediately before it starts spreading through the body.
It should be noted that, the cancer starts in the breasts as small as a pawpaw seed and develops into a bigger lump which starts spreading throughout the body and into the bloodstream and that is where it becomes deadly and kills if it is not detected early but if it is detected early, it can be prevented. The talk ended with free screening of the breasts by medical personal from Korle bu teaching hospital and peace and love clinic in kumasi.
