CANCER RESEARCH UK

UNITED AGAINST CANCER: MY CRUK  CAMPAIGNS JOURNEY

I’m thrilled to share my new role as a Campaigns Ambassador with Cancer Research UK (CRUK). It’s an honor to join this incredible organization and contribute to a world free from cancer. Here’s a look at my first experience in this role.

As an ambassador, I  am to advocate for cancer research, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatments by engaging with MPs and the public, collecting petition signatures, and promoting CRUK’s initiatives on social media.

My journey began on June 18, 2024, at 2 Redman Place, Stratford. The day included registration, a CRUK marketplace, and a meet-and-greet. Shaun Walsh, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigning, welcomed us and introduced the Turning Point for Cancer campaign. We participated in an interactive workshop on influencing politicians to support the Tobacco and Vapes Bill for a smokefree UK. Unfortunately, our planned Parliament Day was postponed due to elections, which would have allowed us to meet MPs to discuss the bill and advocate for a smokefree future.

A highlight was the Ambassador Panel, featuring inspiring stories from:

•  David, who lost five loved ones to cancer.

•  Carol, a cancer survivor and widow, affected by multiple cancer losses in her family.

•  Larissa, a former Miss Great Britain contestant, motivated by personal and family experiences with cancer.

The next day, originally scheduled as Parliament Day at Westminster, was canceled due to the elections. We began with registration and networking, followed by a welcome address from Dr. Owen Jackson. We heard from speakers including Victoria Poole, who shared her story of losing grandparents to cancer and her father’s recent diagnosis; Dr. Hugo De la Peña, an NHS cancer consultant; Naser Turabi, Director of Evidence and Implementation at CRUK; Dr. Ian Walker, an executive board member; and Michelle Mitchell, CRUK’s CEO. We took a group photo to share the #TurningPointForCancer message across social media, engaging MPs and the public. The day included a Turning Point for Cancer Pledge Panel and concluded with a collaborative campaigning activity, Together for Turning Point for Cancer.

I’m eager for our rescheduled Parliament Day to reconnect with fellow ambassadors and continue this vital work!!!!
